Dental Corps Special Pays

Validated May 2026

Dental Corps officers may receive up to three concurrent special pays beyond Basic Pay: Incentive Pay (IP), an annually paid Retention Bonus (RB), and Board Certification Pay (BCP). All three run simultaneously when eligibility is maintained — no election required. Rates represent DoD-authorized maximums; individual services may pay less. Effective October 1, 2025.

BCP applies on top of IP and RB with no interaction between the three.

Incentive Pay and Retention Bonus

All dollar amounts are annual. IP is paid in equal monthly installments (divide by 12 for monthly amount). RB is paid as an annual lump sum. The IP column shows the Fully Qualified rate — there is no separate training-phase IP structure for Dental Corps.

Note A — Advance Clinical Practice (ACP): The ACP row covers dental officers credentialed in Endodontics, Exodontia, General Dentistry, Periodontics, or Prosthodontics at the ACP level. The IP rate is the same as the named specialty rows ($27,000/yr), but the RB rates are lower — a dentist who completed a full ADA-recognized specialty residency in Endodontics, Periodontics, or Prosthodontics should use the named specialty row to receive the higher RB (e.g., $65,000/yr 6-year vs $50,000/yr for ACP).

Critically Short Wartime Special Accession Bonus (CSWSAB)

The CSWSAB is a one-time accession bonus for dental officers commissioning into the Dental Corps. It is not a recurring pay — it is paid at accession under a written agreement committing to 4 years of active duty. Dental Corps CSWSAB has a 4-year obligation only (no 3-year option). Officers already on active duty are not eligible. Cannot be combined with a regular officer accession bonus under 37 U.S.C. § 332 for the same service period.

Eligibility

Dental Corps special pays are authorized under DoDI 6000.13 and DoD FMR Vol. 7A, Ch. 5. Coverage applies to Army, Navy, and Air Force Dental Corps officers (Marine Corps is served by Navy Dental Corps).

To be eligible, a Dental Corps officer must:

  1. Hold an appointment as a commissioned officer in a Military Service and be entitled to basic pay (37 U.S.C. § 204) or qualifying Reserve Component compensation (37 U.S.C. § 206) (§6.2.1.1)
  2. Execute a written agreement accepted by the Secretary concerned that specifies the pay type, amount, service obligation, and repayment terms if eligibility requirements are not met (§2.3)
  3. Not have reached the mandatory retirement or removal date at the time of agreement execution (§2.3.1)

For IP specifically:

  • Agreement must be for at least 1 year; IP cannot be prorated (§6.1.1)
  • The effective date is calculated from the date qualifying training is completed plus 3 months (§6.1.3)

For RB specifically:

  • Specialty qualifications must be completed before the beginning of the fiscal year in which the written agreement is executed (§7.2.2)
  • Agreement options are 2, 3, 4, or 6 years (§7.2.3)

For BCP specifically:

  • Must hold a post-baccalaureate degree in a clinical specialty (§5.1.1.4)
  • Must hold an active board certification in that specialty (§5.1.1)

IP and RB must be for the same specialty. A dental officer qualified in two specialties may only receive IP and RB for one. Both agreements must be effective on the same date (§2.1).

IP rate locks when an RB agreement is executed. Once in an RB contract, IP continues at the rate in effect on the effective date of that agreement for the contract's duration. Renegotiating either the IP or RB requires a new RB agreement at the then-current rate with a new obligation extending beyond the original (§6.1.2).

Officers at O-7 and above in the Dental Corps receive IP at the General Dental Officer rate only, regardless of specialty credentials (§6.2.2). The General Dental Officer rate corresponds to the General Dentistry row ($20,000/yr).

What This Means for Your Pay

Nearly every dental specialty earns the same monthly IP. Thirteen of the fourteen specialty rows carry an IP of $27,000/yr ($2,250/month). Only General Dentistry ($20,000/yr, $1,667/month) and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery ($66,000/yr, $5,500/month) break from that pattern. The real pay differentiation for most dental officers comes from RB term length and specialty selection, not from IP rate variation.

ACP row vs. named specialty row is a meaningful RB difference. A dentist who completed an Endodontics residency and uses the named Endodontics row earns up to $65,000/yr RB on a 6-year agreement. The same dentist using the ACP row earns only $50,000/yr. The IP is identical either way — the difference is entirely in the RB. Always use the most specific row your credentials support.

RB is paid annually as a lump sum, not monthly. The RB column shows annual amounts. A dentist under a 6-year Comprehensive Dentistry agreement gets $75,000 once per year, not added to monthly pay. IP is the monthly component — divide the Annual IP column by 12.

BCP stacks with everything. A board-certified dental officer collects $667/month on top of IP and RB simultaneously. No election required.

Your IP rate locks when you sign an RB. Service-wide rate increases during your RB term do not flow through automatically. To capture a higher rate, you must renegotiate with a new, longer commitment.

Specialty qualifications must be complete before the fiscal year starts. You cannot execute an RB for a specialty you completed during the current fiscal year — qualifications must be complete before the fiscal year in which you sign begins (§7.2.2).

There is a 3-month delay before IP starts. IP effective date is training completion plus 3 months (§6.1.3). There is no IP payment during those 3 months, and no retroactive payment once IP begins.

These are DoD maximums — your Service may pay less. Confirm actual rates with your service personnel office before signing any agreement.

HPS&I pay does not count toward retirement. None of IP, RB, or BCP factor into retired pay calculations (§2.2.1).

The CSWSAB is a one-time payment — it will never appear on a recurring LES. It is paid once at accession under a 4-year written agreement. Dental Corps CSWSAB has no 3-year option. Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery tops the table at $700,000; Comprehensive Dentistry, Endodontics, and Prosthodontics each reach $400,000; General Dentistry is $150,000. Active duty officers are not eligible; the window is commissioning only. The CSWSAB cannot be combined with a standard officer accession bonus under 37 U.S.C. § 332 for the same service period.

Common Mistakes

Treating ACP and named specialty rows as equivalent. The IP rate is the same, but the RB rates for ACP are lower than the named specialty rows. A residency-trained specialist in Endodontics, Periodontics, or Prosthodontics leaves money on the table by selecting ACP.

Reading the IP column as a monthly rate. The table shows the annual IP rate. Divide by 12 for the monthly installment. OMS at $66,000 means $5,500/month; most other specialties at $27,000 means $2,250/month.

Expecting IP rate increases mid-RB contract. IP is locked at the rate in effect when the RB was executed. Service-wide rate increases during the contract do not pass through until renegotiation, which requires a longer new commitment.

Electing IP and RB for multiple specialties. §2.1 allows IP and RB for exactly one specialty. You cannot split — higher IP from one specialty, higher RB from another.

Treating DFAS table values as your service's guaranteed rate. The table lists DoD-authorized maximums. Army, Navy, and Air Force each set amounts within those ceilings independently. Verify with your service personnel office.

Assuming O-7+ Dental receives specialty IP. Dental Corps officers at O-7 and above are capped at the General Dental Officer rate ($20,000/yr) regardless of specialty credentials (§6.2.2).

Expecting RB to appear in monthly pay. RB is an annual lump-sum, not a monthly allotment.

Forgetting the 3-month IP start delay. IP effective date is training completion plus 3 months per §6.1.3. No retroactive payment is made once IP begins.

Expecting a 3-year CSWSAB option in the Dental Corps. Unlike the Medical Corps, Dental Corps CSWSAB has no 3-year option — the only agreement length is 4 years. A dentist who cannot commit to 4 years is not eligible. Also, the CSWSAB is a one-time accession bonus — it is not a recurring pay and cannot be earned by officers already on active duty.
